An interesting video on YouTube illustrating how over-compression is squeezing the dynamics and life out of music:
As we've progressed in our own recording skills we've noticed that highly compressed music is more attention grabbing but also more tiring on one's ears -- if just wears you out and doesn't stand up to repeated listening as well. Legendary producer (and one of our personal favorites) Tony Viscotti once stated that compression "was the sound of pop music" and while that's entirely true, there does need to be a careful balance between sonic hype and aural longevity.
