There was something very peculiar and a bit tragic about last night's Grammy awards. The entire show seemed mired in the music and sounds of the past. From Aretha Franklin, to Tina Turner, to Herbie Hancock, to the Beatles (twice!), the spectacle of older artist eclipsing new ones was a bit jarring. Even the show's one genuinely big new act, Amy Winehouse is really just a rehashing of the girl groups sound of the 60s.
Now I understand that they were doing a "history of the Grammies" shtick for the 50th anniversary but it just seemed so wrong. So, well, tired and old. The entire show I kept asking myself:
Maybe illegal downloads really aren't the music industry's biggest problem these days...
